FET-OPEN May 2017 cut-off Evaluation Results: 28 proposals selected for funding

A new batch of 28 excellent proposals that aim at exploring novel ideas for Future and Emerging Technologies has been invited for grant preparation. The 26 Research and Innovation Actions and 2 Coordination and Support Actions were selected in a fierce competition by independent experts out of 374 submitted proposals. The next deadline for submitting a FET-Open proposal is on 27 September 2017.

FET Open Research and Innovation Actions (RIA)

  • AMPHORA aims to maximise tumour irradiation with a minimum damage of healthy tissue, revolutionizing quality assurance and treatment follow up in radiotherapy.  Coordinator: Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.
  • ASPIN is planning to utilize the recent discovery of a new relativistic spin-torque phenomenon (which allows an efficient control of antiferromagnetic moments) in exploring antiferromagnetic memory-logic components suitable for the development of future information technologies. Coordinator: Fyzikální ústav AV ČR, v. v. i., Czech Republic.
  • CARBAT proposes the exploration of novel calcium based rechargeable batteries, which could contribute to solving some of the grand challenges of modern society like pollution, oil-dependency, and climate change. Coordinator: Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior Deinvestigaciones Cientificas, Spain.
  • COPAC targets a new technological paradigm for ultrafast parallel multi-valued information processing by foundational experimental, theoretical and algorithmic innovations. It aims to develop a ground-breaking nonlinear coherent spectroscopy combining optical addressing and spatially macroscopically resolved optical readout to achieve unprecedented levels of speed, density and complexity.   • COSMICS intends to develop a modelling platform around molecular spintronics and general concepts for efficient strategies to greatly optimize the magneto-transport properties of materials/devices. Coordinator: Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives, France.
  • COSY-BIO aims at developing a theoretical framework and innovative technological tools to engineer reliable biological systems that are robust despite their individual components by translating principles of control engineering to molecular and cell biology. Automatic control is a well-established engineering discipline to build “controllers” to steer the dynamic behaviour of a physical system in a desired fashion.   • CURE will work towards achieving control over the immune dysregulation and clinical presentation of the asthmatic disease by reinstating eubiosis within the asthmatic airway through phage therapy. Coordinator: Ethniko Kai Kapodistriako Panepistimio Athinon, Greece.
  • EFINED targets revolutionary energy filtering nano-devices for information and communication technologies. Coordinator: Teknologian tutkimuskeskus VTT Oy, Finland.
  • FLASH seeks to develop a room-temperature THz laser integrated on Si using CMOS technology-compatible processes and materials, providing a step-change in compactness, reduced cost, and suitability for existing and new applications. Coordinator: Universita Degli Studi Roma Tre, Italy.
  • HiTIMe aims at using a Topological Insulator (TI) nanoribbon to create a topologically protected single-electron charge pump that can be used as a metrological quantum current standard, or in other words to lay the technological foundations for a TI-based device that can realize the SI Ampere. Coordinator: Chalmers Tekniska Hoegskola Ab, Sweden.
  • HybridHeart envisions to develop and bring to the clinic soft biocompatible artificial organs consisting of a soft robotics shell with actuators (‘artificial muscles’) and sensors, enabling completely natural motion. Coordinator: Academisch Medisch Centrum bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
  • INDEX will isolate and characterize nanoparticles available in bodily fluids through development and integration of novel technological breakthroughs, enabling the analysis of clinically valuable nanoparticles called exosomes towards new generation diagnostics. Coordinator: Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy.
  • MADONNA is about bringing a suite of chemical reactions (and its related non-biological compounds and elements) to their 'biologization' by tuning and overcoming the uni-directionality of the information flow. Coordinator: Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior Deinvestigaciones Cientificas, Spain.
  • MEMO targets to create the first miniaturization roadmap for mechanical machinery down to the atomic scale, as single molecule-machines will be constructed and tested on a surface and one at a time, controlling the rotation and the work delivered by a single molecule-motor directly at the atomic scale. Coordinator: Technische Universität Dresden, Germany.
  • microSPIRE intends to establish a technological platform for homo- and hetero-structure based photonic and electronic devices using the self-assembling of epitaxial crystals on patterned Si substrates. Coordinator: Politecnico di Milano, Italy.
  • NANOPHLOW is planning to lay the basis for an entire novel technology where thermal gradients and concentration gradients along nano-sized channels are harnessed to drive devices that have no equivalent on the macroscopic scale.  Coordinator: Universitat de Barcelona, Spain.
  • NanoStencil seeks to initiate a new process paradigm for the production of dense arrays of identical nanostructures of precise size, shape and composition by combining the simplicity of structuring with light, with the advantages of molecular self-assembly, to provide a single step, cost effective and state of the art capability for next-generation ordered arrays of nanostructures. Coordinator: The University of Sheffield, The United Kingdom.
  • PEGASUS intends to bring about a disruptive and highly competitive alternative to conventional lengthy/multistep routes by creating a highly efficient, catalyst/harmful-free novel plasma method along with a proof-of-concept PEGASUS device for a large-scale N-graphene direct synthesis. Coordinator: Associacao do Instituto Superior Tecnico para a Investigacao e Desenvolvimento, Portugal.
  • PETER proposes to establish Plasmon-enhanced Terahertz Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy and scanning microscopy as a unique Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) platform for high-sensitivity local analysis of paramagnetic organic and inorganic species and materials. Coordinator: Vysoke uceni technicke v Brne, Czech Republic.
  • PRe-ART aims at creating a foundational new technology platform to completely replace conventional antibody technology within medical diagnostics and basic life science research, by generating non-antibody components capable of being combined in an entirely modular fashion to create molecules that could bind any peptide of choice. Coordinator:  Universität Zürich, Switzerland.
  • Q-SORT introduces a revolutionary concept whereby the Transmission Electron Microscopy is employed as a Quantum Sorter by introducing a new parallel analysis strategy of the wavefunction to achieve three other high-risk breakthroughs of vast applicability: assessing the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of plasmonic resonances in select nanoparticles, achieving atomic-resolution magnetic dichroism, and identifying different proteins based on selected properties.  Coordinator: Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy.
  • QuIET envisions to demonstrate that room-temperature quantum interference effects can be exploited in massively-parallel arrays of molecules and used to design ultra-thin-film thermoelectric devices with unprecedented ability to convert waste heat to electricity by using the Seebeck effect and cooling at the nanoscale via the Peltier effect. Coordinator: Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain.
  • SALBAGE is planning to create a new Sulfur-Aluminium battery having a high energy density and low price compared with the actual Li-ion technology by putting in the synthesis of solid-like electrolytes based on polymerizable ionic liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents in order to obtain polymer-gel electrolytes with a high ionic conductivity at room temperature.   • SilkFUSION seeks to engineer groundbreaking 3D nanotechnologies for large-scale production of blood platelets for human transfusion from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). Coordinator: Università degli Studi di Pavia, Italy.
  • STARDUST will develop a novel wireless implantable and independent micro-scale device to be used in targeting specific neural circuits of the brain and test a new therapeutic approach for Parkinson’s disease. Coordinator: Aarhus Universitet, Denmark.
  • TEQ will establish the large-scale limit of quantum mechanics by pursuing a novel research programme that aims at surpassing the current approach based on matter-wave interferometry.  Coordinator: Universita degli Studi di Trieste, Italy.

FET Open Coordination and Support Actions (CSA)

  • FuSuMaTech is a dedicated and large scale silo breaking programme which will create a sustainable European Cluster in applied Superconductivity by enlarging the innovative potential especially in High Field NMR and MRI, opening future breakthroughs in the brain observation.  Coordinator: Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives, France.
  • ORCHID will create a roadmap for organ-on-chip technology and the framework to build a network of relevant stakeholders. It will bring together key players and raise awareness on organ-on-chip technology throughout Europe.  Coordinator: Academisch Ziekenhuis Leiden, The Netherlands.
