Urban Innovative Actions: € 50 million of European funds for solutions to urban challenges
19/12/2016
The European Commission has just published a second call for proposals worth € 50 million under the Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) initiative. Cities can now directly request and receive EU funding for innovative urban projects.

In the first call, eighteen winning projects were selected. The city of Bilbao, with the proposal called AS FABRIK, elaborated by ZABALA was one of the winners. The Commission launches a second call to award the most innovative projects presented by the cities themselves.

The European Commissioner for Regional Policy - Corina Creţu, explained that this initiative will offer cities the means to convert their ideas into concrete practices that can be shared in other European regions. He added that the initiative is a way to find solutions to the most pressing urban challenges, such as unemployment, social exclusion and climate change, "which will come from the cities themselves." In this sense he added that the Urban Agenda "is precisely conceived to empower cities and make their voices heard."

The new call for proposals, with a budget of € 50 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), will reward the most innovative projects in three categories - in line with the priorities of the EU Urban Agenda: the integration of immigrants, Urban mobility and the circular economy. The call will be open until April 14, 2017.

The EU Urban Agenda

The Pact of Amsterdam (30 May 2016) and the Council Conclusions (24 June 2016) formed the Urban Agenda for the EU and established its fundamental principles.

At the heart of the Urban Agenda, twelve partnerships allow cities, Member States, EU institutions, NGOs and business partners to work together on an equal footing to improve the quality of life in urban areas. Four pilot associations have already begun work on themes such as the inclusion of immigrants, air quality, housing and urban poverty.

In line with the thematic priorities of the Urban Agenda, the UIA initiative provides resources for EU cities to finance innovative projects, with a total allocation of € 372 million from the ERDF for the period 2014-2020. In the first call, eighteen projects were selected from 378 applications.
