Key partner of the EU-GUGLE smart city project, the City of Aachen will host a Conference on Sustainable Renovation Models on the 22th of April 2016, preceded by an optional site visit of renovated buildings on the 21st April. The event will be an opportunity to learn from the experiences of the 6 pilot cities involved in the EU-GUGLE project (Aachen, Tampere, Vienna, Milan, Bratislava, Sestao) and from Zabala Innovation Consulting and other stakeholders engaged in smart renovation projects.
Speakers will cover a wide range of issues such as the involvement of stakeholders in refurbishment activities, refurbishment technologies and their replicability, scalability of solutions and financing models.
Concrete case-studies and panel discussions will allow participants to share their experiences. On the afternoon of the 21st, an optional study tour will be organized by the city of Aachen in the areas retrofitted as part of the EU-GUGLE project, while the conference itself will take place on the 22nd.
- The Conference will be held in English and German

The EU-GUGLE project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of nearly-zero energy building renovation models with the view of triggering large-scale, Europe-wide replication in smart cities and communities by 2020. Taking on the challenge of sustainable renovation in urban areas, the cities of Vienna (AT), Aachen (DE), Milan (IT), Sestao (ES), Tampere (FI) and Bratislava (SK) have committed to renovating a total of 226,000m² of living space during the 5 years of the project, with the objective of achieving 40 to 80% primary energy savings per pilot district while increasing the share of renewable energy sources by 25% by 2018. Gothenburg (SE) and Gaziantep (TR) will take part in the 5-year project as associated cities and will be expected to start smart renovation activities during project’s lifetime.
Zabala Innovation Consulting’s European activities include a strong involvement in other SmartCities related projects such as Replicate, Sinfonia and the EIP Market Place SmartCities Secretariat (Market Place of the EIP on Smart Cities and Communities).
