Horizon 2020, the European Union's Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for the period 2014-2020, ends next year and, for this last call, has a budget of almost €784 million to finance projects in Health.

Around 185 M euros will be allocated to the following 4 lines of great interest in Health:

  1. SC1-BHC-08 (RIA): New interventions for Non-Communicable Diseases
  2. SC1-BHC-24 (RIA): Healthcare interventions for the management of the elderly multimorbid patient
  3. SC1-BHC-29 (RIA): Innovative actions for improving urban health and wellbeing -addressing environment, climate and socioeconomic factors
  4. SC1-DTH-13 (RIA): Implementation research for scaling up and transfer of innovative solutions involving digital tools for people-centred care

The line SC1-BHC-08-2020: New interventions for Non-Communicable Diseases is one of the most interesting ones for this last call due to its great potential, both in terms of budget and thematic area. It has initially earmarked funds of 80 million euros, which would make it possible to finance some 15-16 projects without any predefined pathology (except for rare diseases and regenerative therapies that fall outside this line).

Submission of proposals and key dates

The submission of proposals for this programme is divided into two phases: phase 1 consists of presenting the project in summary form and the consortium, followed by phase 2, which consists of a detailed description of the consortium and the project. The closing date for phase 1 will be 24 September 2019.

The opening date of the calls established on July 4th, although on July 3rd an Infoday on Social Challenge 1 will be held in Brussels, followed by a collaboration and partner search event on July 4th; the event is organised by the Health-NCP-NET project which encompasses national health points throughout Europe and is led by the Carlos III Health Institute.

We can help

ZABALA has an extensive experience in the presentation and management of collaboration projects, both in H2020 and in other calls of great interest for Health such as CHAFEA and IMI.

Currently, ZABALA is coordinating a large H2020 Health project (HIVACAR), with a budget of almost 7 million euros and 14 partners whose objective is to change the current paradigm of HIV treatment by obtaining a functional cure.

Opportunity for Health projects in Spain

Spain has been improving its return in the area of health and according to the latest data, ranks sixth for return with 8.3%, approaching the average return of the rest of programs which is around 10%, according to the latest data, and in which the year 2020 could be achieved.

It is important to take advantage of this opportunity to finance the high quality research that is being carried out in Spain and which fits perfectly with the European lines: management of elderly patients with multimorbidities (BHC-24), urban health (BHC-29) and digital tools for people-centred care (DTH-13) in which ZABALA also has extensive experience with both different cities and health systems.
