NESOI - European Islands Facility

New Energy Solutions Optimized for Islands

NESOI aims at unlocking the potential of EU islands to become the locomotives of European Energy Transition, mainstreaming green energy investments to an audience of 2.400 inhabited EU islands and giving the opportunity to test there innovative energy technologies and approaches in a cost-competitive way.

This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement Nº 864266.

Project:
NESOI
Programme:
HORIZON 2020
Period:
2019-2023
Sector:
ENERGY
01
The Challenge:

Funds are available to finance energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Many islands are engaged in energy transition; however, most of them haven’t the expertise to concretely launch investments, access finance and kick start the projects.

02
Solutions:
NESOI aims at filling this gap through a hands-on approach allowing to get the expected financial leverage towards the effective implementation of islands’ energy transition plans. NESOI supports projects at different stages of development starting from early-stage ones requiring a high-level technical & economic assistance to more advanced ones asking for specific contributions on various fields (technical, legal, financial), putting forward a reality-check mindset to make islands focus on solid projects with the potential to attract investors.
03
Impacts:

NESOI platform will lead to elaborate at least 20 energy transition action plans in EU islands and initiate 40 specific implementation projects within NESOI lifetime. Furthermore, efficient dissemination, communication and replication activities, methodology and tools will enable to engage at least 50 follower islands able to extend impact through the development and implementation of 40 additional energy transition plans and the uptake of over 300 potential low carbon energy projects by 2030.

The NESOI Facility will bring Europe’s energy transition ambitions a step forward by providing to islands training, technical support, cooperation opportunities and robust funding opportunities to concretely implement Renewable Energy Sources (RES) plants, buildings and energy infrastructure retrofitting, energy bills reduction, local job creation and more, allowing them to become the locomotives of European Energy Transition.
