Due diligence to boost business and the local economy through public-private collaboration with communities

In Africa, some companies have begun to apply the international human rights standards to respect and favor communities living in the territories where they are implementing their business activities. In Namibia, an agrifood sector company has elaborated an impact study under the premise of due diligence in Business and Human Rights, opening a dialogue between the public and private sectors and the communities, with the support of cooperation agencies. This initiative has contributed to the economic development of the area and promoted local business opportunities.

The Challenge:

Many companies face difficulties when implementing the principle of Due Diligence in Business and Human Rights in certain countries and regions, which can negatively impact local communities.

02
Solutions:
Social impact assessments are carried out by companies in order to reinforce the positive impact of their business activities. Mitigation plans are designed and implemented to avoid or reduce any negative impact. The participation of local communities is key to reach a consensus on the needs of the population with regards to business activities.
03
Impacts:

Local communities will be empowered by a strengthened economy that creates employment opportunities, improves gender equality,  and promotes knowledge transfer. Various joint actions, such as the integration of local businesses as suppliers, thus boosting export-oriented sales, can help expand and develop almost non-existent markets.

"Social impact assessments are carried out by companies in order to reinforce the positive impact of their business activities. In Namibia it is being possible through the dialogue of different stakeholders and the implmentation of due diligence processes".
