On 27 October 2015, the European Commission adopted its Work Programme for the year ahead (2016 CWP), and presented it to the European Parliament the same day. Based on the 10 political guidelines set out in mid-2014 by President Jean-Claude Juncker, it builds on the 'framework strategies' adopted by the Commission since entering office and places emphasis on the legislative measures and concrete followup actions needed to implement them.

On 14-15 January, four projects funded by the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development held a conference in Brussels, co-hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee, to present their findings, conceptual developments, concrete messages and policy recommendations on Responsible Research and Innovation.

The Commission adopted on the 19th of January 2016 a package on the ex-post evaluation of the 7th Framework Programme. This consists of a Communication responding to the recommendations of an external High Level Expert Group and a Staff Working Document in which the Commission services have evaluated FP7 on the basis of the five evaluation criteria of the Better Regulation package (efficiency, effectiveness, coherence, relevance and EU added value).

The environmental benefits of adopting a circular economy in Europe could be considerable – reducing waste, and minimising the continent’s heavy dependence on imports of raw materials. A new report published today by the European Environment Agency (EEA) draws attention to both the benefits and challenges of such an economic transition. The report also describes possible ways to measure progress and highlights the areas where more attention is required from research and policy in order to turn the concept into reality.

The European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities will hold its 2016 General Assembly on May 24 in Eindhoven (Netherlands). Over 400 participants are expected, making it one of the most important smart city innovation events in Europe.

Today Member States agreed on a Commission proposal to invest €217 million in key trans-European energy infrastructure projects, mainly in Central and South Eastern Europe. In total, 15 projects were selected following a call for proposals under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), an EU funding programme for infrastructure. The selected projects will increase energy security and help end the isolation of Member States from EU-wide energy networks. They will also contribute to the completion of a European energy market and the integration of renewables into the electricity grid.

The UK is well-known as a major financial centre, but it is also a global hub in the fast-growing green finance arena, according to a new report released today by the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial system. The report is being released at a major event co-hosted by UNEP and the City of London Corporation, where a new Green Finance Initiative will be launched by the City with the aim of making London the world leader in green finance.
