CEF Transport 2022, new call for proposals to modernise transport infrastructure
It has a budget of 5,120 million euros to finance investments to develop trans-European transport networks
The official opening of the BBI-JU 2020 call is scheduled for April 15th. Discover what the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking is and which projects can benefit from this programme.
The Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) is a public-private partnership (PPP) between the European Commission and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). Its main objective is to reduce Europe’s dependence on fossil fuels and their derivatives, moving towards a bio-economy that will help alleviate the effects of climate change and transform the European economy into one that is more respectful of the environment.
With this objective, the BBI JU finances research and innovation actions, as well as coordination and support actions, in line with the participation rules of Horizon 2020.
BBI JU calls are open to private for-profit and non-profit organizations, including large companies, SMEs, research and technology organizations, universities, associations or any interested legal entity.
BBI-JU, operates under the umbrella of the Horizon 2020 programme, to implement the Strategic Agenda (SIRA) developed by industry and validated by the European Commission. To this end, between 2014 and 2020, annual calls for proposals are organized, to support research, demonstration and development activities allowing the collaboration of all actors in the value chains from the primary production of biomass to the final user (industrial or final consumer), including the processing industry with the support of research organizations and other actors.
The BBI-JU has announced the opening of the last call of the current Programme on April 15th, with a planned closing date of September 3rd 2020 and an estimated budget of more than 102 million euros.
Approximately 16 projects dedicated to the development of the industry from 4 strategic orientations will be financed: Biomass Sources, Transformation Processes, Final Products and Market Arrival.
The typology of the projects covers different degrees of development, including more advanced research projects, projects demonstrating new technologies, and large projects aimed at the installation of Biorefineries in Europe.
In order to inform about this new call and its news, the Commission has created a portal with the latest news and has organized on April 22nd an Info Day that, due to the coronavirus crisis, will be held virtually. The sessions will be transmitted by web streaming and the bilateral networking meetings will also be held virtually.
This day is aimed at potential applicants who plan to present projects to this call.

To achieve the development of this emerging sector in Europe 3.7 million euros will be invested between 2014 and 2020, 975 million euros of which will come from European funds (Horizon 2020) and 2.7 million euros from private investment. To date, 101 projects have been approved.
To guarantee the future of BBI and the opportunities for the sector, the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) is cooperating with the European Commission to create a new public-private partnership in Horizon Europe, the Framework Programme that will regulate European R&D in the period 2021-2028. The aim is to develop and expand the achievements of the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU). To this end, a new Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda (SIRA2030) is being developed.
In order to allow all interested parties to contribute to the development of SIRA2030, a public consultation has been opened until 30 April. You can access this consultation here.
Furthermore, BBI’s intention to strengthen the Bioeconomy sector in Europe is completely aligned with the EU’s commitment reflected in the European Green Deal, a roadmap created to provide the EU with a sustainable economy.
