Solving systemic challenges through local solutions: energy communities as drives of digital and social innovation to achieve the EU’s energy transition
European Islands
NESOI closed its first open call with 117 applications from islands belonging to over 15 different EU countries.

The European Islands Facility NESOI aims at helping local European islands reach their energy transition ambitions. NESOI offers grants of up to € 60k per proposal as well as up to € 60K worth of Technical Assistance. The first open call closed on the 18th of December 2020.
A total of 117 applications from islands belonging to over 15 different EU countries were received, which is a great success for our NESOI platform, as we have succeeded in reaching all the islands across Europe. The selected islands projects that will receive support from the NESOI project are scheduled to be announced in late February 2021.
A key challenge for local authorities and legal private entities on islands is to transform their overall long-term ambitions into a credible set of plans and project outlines as many do not have the expertise to concretely launch investments, access finance and kick-start their projects. For this reason, the European Islands Facility NESOI aims to support successful energy transition projects on EU islands, mobilising more than €100m of investment and significantly reducing CO2 and GHG emissions through a hands-on approach allowing local authorities and legal private entities to get the necessary technical and financial capacity for the effective implementation of islands’ energy transition plans.
