LIFE Programme

The LIFE programme is the European Union’s funding instrument for projects in environment, climate action and clean energy transition, under the framework of the European Green Deal. With a total budget of €5.4 billion for the 2021–2027 period, it supports projects that develop close-to-market solutions, demonstrate innovative approaches and deliver replicable and scalable impact across Europe.

LIFE is designed to help organisations turn their environmental and climate ambitions into real projects with measurable results.

LIFE 2026 call for proposals: key opportunities

The LIFE 2026 call for proposals offers over €580 million in funding for projects in environment, climate action and clean energy transition across Europe. Most submission deadlines fall in September 2026, making this a key opportunity for organisations planning to apply.

The call includes a range of project types, from Standard Action Projects (SAP) to Strategic Integrated Projects (SIP) and Strategic Nature Projects (SNaP), as well as technical assistance and coordination and support actions.

LIFE CET, the key to accelerating the energy transition in Europe

  • Project definition and fit

We assess your idea to ensure it aligns with the LIFE 2026 programme, identifying the most suitable subprogramme and project type (SAP, SIP, SNaP, CSA or others). We work with you to define a clear approach focused on impact, replicability and scalability—key elements in the evaluation process.

  • Technical design and strategic approach

We help you structure your project as a close-to-market solution, defining concrete results, impact indicators and a coherent intervention logic. We place particular emphasis on the project’s contribution to European policies, such as the Green Deal, and its potential to be replicated in other contexts.

  • Proposal preparation

We support you in developing all sections of the LIFE proposal, ensuring they clearly address the evaluation criteria: impact, technical quality and feasibility. This includes defining activities, expected results, communication and exploitation strategy, and the replication plan.

  • Budget and financial consistency

We develop a budget aligned with the project activities and LIFE programme rules, ensuring consistency between resources, objectives and results, as well as proper cost justification.

  • Partnership building and management

We support the identification and coordination of partners where required, ensuring the consortium has the necessary capacity to implement the project successfully and maximise its impact at European level.

  • Proposal review and improvement

We carry out critical reviews to strengthen the clarity, coherence and positioning of your proposal. We focus on the key aspects that make the difference in LIFE: measurable impact, replicability and alignment with EU priorities.

  • Support through to submission

We work closely with your team throughout the entire process, ensuring your proposal is submitted on time, complete and fully aligned with all LIFE 2026 call requirements.

We answer your questions about LIFE

  • What level of technological maturity (TRL) is expected in LIFE projects?

The LIFE programme is not aimed at basic research, but at projects in more advanced stages of development. Solutions are expected to be at medium to high Technology Readiness Levels (typically around TRL 5–8), meaning technologies that have already been validated and can be demonstrated in real or close-to-market environments.

  • Can early-stage projects (low TRL) be submitted?

This is not typical. LIFE mainly funds pilot, demonstration or best practice projects, so proposals should be based on a solution that has already been developed and validated at least at prototype level.

  • What is the difference between a pilot and a demonstration project in LIFE?

    LIFE projects can be:

    • Pilot: test a new technique or method under limited conditions
    • Demonstration: validate a solution under real conditions, close to its final application

In both cases, the objective is to enable replication at a larger scale and contribute to the implementation of European policies.

  • What level of development is expected for the business model or exploitation?

Although LIFE is not a purely commercial programme, it requires a clear strategy for exploitation, replicability and transfer. This means demonstrating how results can be applied in other contexts or scaled up after the project ends.

  • Is it necessary to demonstrate impact in the proposal?

Yes. One of the key evaluation criteria is the project’s ability to generate measurable environmental or climate impact, aligned with EU legislation and policies. Proposals must include clear and quantifiable indicators.

  • What type of innovation does LIFE support?

LIFE does not require disruptive innovation like other programmes (e.g. Horizon Europe), but rather applied innovation, based on:

    • new combinations of existing solutions
    • process improvements
    • application in new contexts

The focus is on impact and replicability, not scientific novelty.

  • What level of replicability is expected in a LIFE project?

Replicability is a key requirement. Projects must demonstrate that their results can be transferred or reproduced in other regions, sectors or contexts, generating impact beyond the initial pilot.
