Challenge

The DESIREE Project addresses the need to scale up renewable hydrogen production to support the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as industry and energy storage. Although hydrogen is a key pillar of the energy transition, most global production still relies on fossil-based processes. High-temperature electrolysis technologies such as Solid Oxide Electrolysers offer high efficiency but face challenges related to durability, material degradation and system costs, limiting their large-scale deployment.

Solution

To tackle these challenges, DESIREE develops advanced technologies for high-temperature electrolysis, focusing on improvements at cell, stack and system levels. The project will design and validate a 40 kW multi-stack Solid Oxide Electrolyser prototype integrating innovative materials, improved sealing solutions and optimized system architecture. The system combines high-temperature electrolysis with thermochemical hydrogen compression and advanced heat integration to enhance efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

Impact

DESIREE contributes to the development of efficient renewable hydrogen production technologies supporting the decarbonisation of energy-intensive sectors. By improving system efficiency, durability and integration with renewable energy sources, the project aims to reduce hydrogen production costs and facilitate wider adoption of electrolysis technologies. Its results will also strengthen Europe’s technological leadership in advanced electrolysis and support the objectives of the European Green Deal.
