BPA is mainly used in the manufacture of epoxy resins which represents one of the largest volumes of chemicals produced world-wide. BPA is classified as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) based on its endocrine disrupting properties). And several studies have demonstrated associations between BPA exposure, even at low doses, and a variety of health impacts for both human and ecosystems, such as reproductive dysfunction and altered hormone system.
The LIFE VIABLE project will demonstrate the scaling up of a breakthrough solution to develop lignin-based epoxy resins at a pre-industrial EU scale. The viability of using these materials in the automotive sector will be demonstrate.
The LIFE VIABLE project will promote a safer and more sustainable use of BPA by reducing its minimum amount. This will reduce the quantities of residual BPA in surface water, soil and link, therefor minimize the exposure of workers to hazardous chemicals and contribute to the replication of a new technology with high potential towards the full functional substitution of BPA for high performance applications of epoxy resins.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, under grant agreement No. LIFE20 ENV/BE/000671
