Horizon Europe is the European Union’s Framework Programme for research and innovation funding for the period 2021-2027. The programme has a budget of 95,500 million euros. Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. It tackles climate change, helps achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and boosts EU competitiveness and growth.

Structure

Horizon Europe is structured around three main pillars.

  • PILLAR I
  • PILLAR II
  • PILAR III

  • The objective of this pillar is to reinforce and broaden the excellence of the Union’s science base. It, therefore, consists of three actors:

    Research infrastructures

  • The second pillar supports research addressing societal challenges and industrial technologies. This sub-programme is structured in 7 clusters:

    • Health
    • Culture, creativity and inclusive society
    • Civil Security for Society
    • Digital, Industry and Space
    • Climate, Energy and Mobility
    • Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment

  • The objective of this pillar is to stimulate breakthrough and market-creating innovations and innovation-enabling ecosystems. It consists of three actors:

    • European Innovation Council

    • European Innovation Ecosystems

    • European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)

Missions

The main new features of Horizon Europe include the Missions. A new way of implementing R&D with social and economic impact in five selected areas: Cancer, Climate Change, Water and Oceans, Smart Cities and Soil and Food Health.
