ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Opportunities and challenges of generative AI

artificial intelligence and consultancy

At the fascinating intersection between human creativity and the ability of machines to learn, Generative Artificial Intelligence emerges. This revolutionary field has seen significant advances in recent months, enabling machines not only to process information, but also to generate original and creative content. From creating art to writing texts, Generative AI is transforming the way we interact with technology and how we conceive creativity.

Generative AI excels in its ability to create original content. This is produced through generative language models based on deep learning techniques that are based on four successive phases.

The first is pattern learning, where the AI, as a GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), is trained on large datasets containing textual examples. The second phase is contextualisation, when the model understands the text of a sequence of words and can predict the next words based on that context. Third, creative generation, once trained, the model can generate new and creative text. And finally, adaptability, as Generative AI can be applied to a variety of creative tasks, such as writing articles, creating poetry, generating dialogues…always depending on the context and training data.

Generative AI at Zabala Innovation

Zabala Innovation is positioned at the forefront of the technological revolution as an innovative organisation in the field of generative artificial intelligence. This distinction is strengthened by our active participation in the European AI-BOOST project, which seeks to drive artificial intelligence to create better opportunities and scientific progress towards a reliable, human-centred digital environment.

Our identity at Zabala Innovation is defined by being a beacon of innovation, where creativity and technology converge to drive advanced solutions. This commitment is manifested in the outstanding participation of our senior consultant, Jaume Cot, who acts as coordinator of the AI-BOOST project.

This project and, in particular, the launch of the Artificial Intelligence Grand Challenge, in collaboration with EuroHPC JU, has been communicated by Thierry Breton himself, who made reference to it at the 4th AI Alliance Assembly: Leading Trustworthy AI Globally. This flagship event brings together policy makers and stakeholders to help shape European policy on artificial intelligence, consolidating Zabala Innovation’s position as a reference in the development of innovative solutions in this field.

“Coordinating a flagship project like AI-BOOST represents a considerable challenge as it aims to become a reference point for the European artificial intelligence community. The first challenge, out of a total of seven, aims to select up to 4 startups capable of developing innovative foundational models using supercomputers (in this case, LUMI or LEONARDO). This project and challenge, not only seeks to promote technological progress, but also to increase Europe’s visibility in this field and collaboration with the AI community,” says Jaume Cot, leader of Zabala Innovation’s team of experts in European Programmes.

He adds that he is “very happy to start this project and to collaborate with a team of experts and great people from a total of 7 institutions: Zabala Innovation, F6S, CINECA, INESC TEC, UNIVERZITA PAVLA JOZEFA SAFARIKA V KOSICIACH, EIT DIGITAL and UNIVERSIDAD POMPEU FABRA”.

Opportunities offered by Generative AI

Generative AI opens up a wide range of opportunities in several areas by leveraging its unique ability to create original content and adapt to different contexts. These include:

  • Amplified creativity: it empowers human creativity by offering suggestions, generating ideas and providing inspiration.
  • Efficient content production: facilitates rapid content generation, saving time and resources in the production of materials.
  • Personalisation of experiences: can be achieved by automatically tailoring content to individual preferences, improving relevance and interaction.
  • Innovation in scientific research: AI can contribute through hypothesis generation, experiment design and data analysis.
  • Product and service design: Generative AI can be used to generate prototypes, improve design and explore creative options.
  • Multimedia content generation: offers new possibilities in artistic production and the entertainment industry.
  • Enhanced machine translation: can improve the quality and fluency of translation contributing to effective communication in multilingual environments.

Challenges to be faced with the emergence of Generative AI

While Generative AI offers numerous opportunities, its emergence also poses significant challenges in several respects. Some of these are outlined below:

  • Ethics and accountability: the possibility of its use for malicious purposes, such as the creation of false information or manipulation, is raised.
  • Bias and discrimination: models can inherit and amplify biases present in training data, which can lead to biased or discriminatory content.
  • Security and cybersecurity: AI can be used to create more sophisticated social engineering attacks or generate malicious content.
  • Intellectual property protection: it is difficult to determine authorship and originality, although so far, the consensus is that authorship belongs to the creation of the prompt.

At the crossroads of challenges and opportunities, Generative AI emerges as a transformative catalyst for all sectors of society.

While its rapid deployment poses challenges that must be approached with care and consideration, the reality is that the potential benefits are promising. From innovation in creativity to significant improvements in operational efficiency, Generative AI offers a range of opportunities that transcend traditional barriers, enabling significant advances in fields as diverse as medicine, scientific research, design and more.

In this context, at Zabala Innovation we consider ourselves a company committed to good work and excellence in the implementation of Generative AI, always from the human hand. With a vision focused on ethics and responsibility, our organisation uses these advanced technologies to continuously improve our services, procedures and work. Through conscious integration and effective management, we seek to make the most of the opportunities that Generative AI brings, while mitigating the associated challenges.
