Challenge

Rural areas and agriculture face major economic, social, and environmental challenges. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and water scarcity threaten their sustainability. Therefore, it is essential to create innovative business and production models that provide real solutions and improve sustainability throughout the entire value chain.

Solution

NEXRUR promotes cooperation between the European Union and China to boost innovation in rural areas. The project supports farmers and communities in developing, adapting, and scaling up sustainable business models, while assessing their economic, social, and environmental impacts.Through 22 community case studies, it combines theoretical and practical research to generate knowledge, promote co-design and co-innovation, and provide strategies and tools that foster a more prosperous and sustainable agriculture.

Impacts

NEXRUR will deliver pathways, strategies, and policy recommendations to strengthen community-led rural business models. In addition, it will develop a monitoring framework for agricultural enterprises and an associated tool focused on key environmental and social performance indicators (KPIs).The results will be widely disseminated across Europe and China, inspiring new and improved production activities that can enhance the prosperity and resilience of rural communities.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europeresearch and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101181273.

“By integrating economic, social, and environmental perspectives, NEXRUR will design scalable and inclusive community-led business models that enhance sustainability and resilience in rural regions”
