Challenge

Pumped storage hydropower is a key contributor to grid stability due to its efficiency and flexibility. However, the surge in unpredictable renewable energy sources requires increased regulation to balance intermittent generation. This intensified demand places a strain on the mechanical components, as they must withstand an increased number of start-stop cycles and rapid transitions from energy generation to storage. This can result in increased operating costs, accelerated deterioration, and damage to critical PSP equipment.

Solution

STOR-HY aims to enhance the lifetime and recyclability of components and equipment by defining operating strategies for unconventional schemes through sensor-based wear and tear monitoring systems. These systems detect early failure mechanisms, allowing unnecessary maintenance to be postponed and unplanned outages to be avoided. In addition, digital operational management tools are used to improve the efficiency, reliability, and availability of pumped storage plants.

Impacts

Taking into account energy and market demand and dynamics, variable renewable generation, and integration, the project addresses the impact of climate change and enhances the flexibility and resilience of the EU energy grid. It focuses on optimising plant availability, providing increased storage potential, peak shaving, fast response regulation, and ancillary services for grid resilience. These developments will result in a wider operating range and increased flexibility of the EU’s hydropower generation and storage potential.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europeresearch and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101172905.

Janire García

“STOR-HY aims to reduce the capital and operational costs of innovative pumped storage projects by increasing the durability and recyclability of pumped storage plant (PSP) components, while minimising costs and environmental impacts throughout the life cycle and increasing social acceptance.”
