NutriEV

CHALLENGE

The NutriEV project will investigate the role of nutritional extracellular vesicles (nutriEVs) in gut health and the microbiome, presenting nutriEV-based solutions for metabolic disorders, such as obesity or diabetes. Global obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1975, resulting in increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and elevated cancer mortality risks. Obesity can reduce life expectancy by 5 to 20 years and imposes significant economic burdens due to healthcare costs and lost productivity from work absenteeism.

SOLUTION

The NutriEV project aims to explore the biomolecular composition and glycosylation effects of nutriEVs from raw and fermented foods. The project utilizes in vitro and in vivo models to investigate how these vesicles interact with the gut microbiome and influence metabolic regulation. By leveraging molecular data from nutriEVs, the project seeks to create new diagnostic tools, precision biosensors, and strategies for developing innovative, health-conscious food products.

IMPACTS

Successfully completing the NutriEV project could revolutionize nutritional medicine by incorporating nutriEVs into therapeutic and diagnostic solutions for obesity and related diseases. It holds potential for transforming the food industry with healthier product formulations and enabling the development of non-invasive biosensors for monitoring health. These innovations may contribute to improving dietary guidelines, advancing clinical trials, and addressing the economic burden posed by obesity and metabolic disorders.
