Hydrogen-based propulsion has the potential to be a significant part of the propulsion technology mix in the near future, aiming to achieve climate-neutral aviation by 2050. Combustion of hydrogen could reduce the climate impact by 50-75% per flight compared to kerosene-based engines, while fuel cell-based propulsion has an even greater estimated impact reduction (75-90%). However, the development of innovative LH2-based solutions presents many new challenges related to hydrogen management and handling at airports, ensuring delivery timelines, and maintaining high levels of safety and operational protection.
ALRIGH2T aims to develop innovative solutions for LH2 refueling processes for commercial aviation that achieve adequate flow rates and relevant volumes, meet safety standards, and are demonstrated at two main European airports: Milan-Malpensa International Airport and a reference airport in Paris. In this regard, all the tasks and activities planned in the project have been carefully designed with the ambitious objective of being fully scalable in the near future. With a focus on safety and standardization issues, this initiative aims to become a reference in the transport sector.
ALRIGH2T works toward the goal that all developed technological solutions will achieve the necessary standards and certifications to be implemented at EU airports by 2030-2035. The project seeks to propel transportation towards zero-emission mobility by leveraging European research and innovation, enhancing the aviation industry’s sustainability and advancing aircraft technologies for significant greenhouse gas emission reduction. Additionally, it aims to expedite the development and implementation of climate-neutral solutions in the aeronautic sector and improve emission reduction strategies through enhanced scientific knowledge.
