Challenge
Despite the crucial role of Energy Communities in the EU’s energy transition, their development on islands remains limited. This is particularly true for EU Outermost Regions, where technical constraints and geographical remoteness create additional barriers to meeting the EU Green Deal targets. The lack of tailored support and access to financing further slows progress.
Solution
NESOI Plus adapts a standardized protocol to the specific needs of outermost regions, offers technical and business support, and creates a One-Stop-Shop for Energy Communities. Through capacity building (KAILA), best practice sharing, and two open calls for 30 pilot projects, NESOI Plus will accelerate the energy transition and strengthen a network of EU islands committed to clean energy.
Impacts
Overcoming these challenges will empower islands to implement bottom-up Energy Community projects, reducing dependence on imported energy, cutting emissions, and fostering local resilience. It will also create sustainable investment opportunities aligned with climate goals.
