REPLICATE (“Renaissance of Places with Innovative Citizenship and Technology”) is an approved project within the call for Smart Cities lighthouse projects of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. Led by Fomento de San Sebastián, the project includes 36 partners and a budget of more than 25 million euros. Zabala Innovation is a partner of the initiative.
The main objective of the REPLICATE project is to build a sustainable city business model to promote the transition to a smart city. Through this project, it will be possible to accelerate the deployment of innovative technologies, organisational and economic solutions to increase resource and energy efficiency, improve the sustainability of urban transport and drastically reduce the greenhouse effect in urban areas.
This model will consider integrated planning through cooperation between citizens and local entities, integrated and viable solutions (business models) for existing challenges in urban areas and ensure that these experiences are applicable in other cities. To this end, transparency in public management will be sought and three aspects of sustainable development will be considered: economic (reduction of energy costs), social (avoiding exclusion and improving health and public welfare) and environmental (energy efficiency, sustainable mobility and improvement of integrated infrastructures).
Lighthouse projects are particularly complex because they require the implementation of pilot experiences and in this case, San Sebastian, Florence and Bristol have been selected. Each district must include actions related to building refurbishment, electric mobility, ICT, renewable energies and smart grids. The project will also be replicated in other European cities and in Turkey: Essen (Germany), Lausanne (Switzerland) and Nilüfer (Turkey).

This project has been financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme, under grant agreement No. 691735.
